Straight answers to the questions owner-operators, fleets and new ventures ask us most.
No. Safeline is an independent insurance brokerage. We work with multiple insurance carriers to shop your coverage, then support you with certificates, filings, renewals and claims after you buy. Your policy is issued by the carrier we place you with.
Most policies combine auto liability, which covers damage you cause to others, with motor truck cargo for the loads you haul and physical damage for your own equipment. Depending on your operation, you may also need non-trucking liability, trailer interchange, reefer breakdown, general liability, workers’ compensation or excess liability.
For most for-hire trucking companies hauling general freight across state lines in vehicles 10,001 pounds or more, the FMCSA minimum is $750,000. Hazardous materials haulers need more, from $1 million to $5 million depending on the load. Many brokers and shippers ask for $1 million, so we look at both your legal minimum and what your contracts require.
Cost depends on your operation, equipment, drivers, loss history, radius, and state. Use the quick estimate on the home page for a starting range, then request an actual quote for pricing based on your details.
Your USDOT number if you have one, the number of trucks and drivers, the type of freight you haul, your current insurance and renewal date, and driver information. New ventures can start without a USDOT number.

We suggest starting 60 to 90 days before your policy expires. That leaves time to compare carriers and fix any open items.
Contact an agent as soon as you get the notice, and have your USDOT number, truck and driver details and current policy information ready. We prioritize urgent submissions and work to find replacement options as quickly as possible. Coverage always depends on underwriting and carrier approval.
